safe winter 2018 newsletter

Hurricane Irma was brutal for SAFE, our precious animals, our staff, and our wonderful volunteers.
Our animals, staff and volunteers are SAFE, and that is what matters most.
Now the storm is over and we must move ahead . There are animals who are depending on us to get back to work quickly.

SAFE headquarters in St. Augustine is without power and received a significant amount of damage.  SAFE’s Treasure Beach location now has power and is open for adoptions.

Twenty-five dogs left for transport this morning to 2 rescue partners in South Carolina who offered to help us out.

Mass Evacuations, thrift  store closures, and a halt in adoptions mean no income combined with extra costs.  This is typically a tough time of the year for our rescue financially, even without all the additional expenses.

Please donate if you can!  We are desperately in need of funds!
Donation methods:
  • online at:
  • mail to:
    SAFE Pet Rescue
    PO Box 840215
    St Augustine, FL 32080
  • drop in person at Treasure Beach or Hollister locations.
All donations are tax deductible

We have plenty of food and water.

Volunteers are welcome at Treasure Beach to take dogs for walks , or out back to the pools.

Volunteers are needed at the Palatka Thrift store in the morning and afternoon to help clean after kitties who are there until the headquarters is repaired and has power restored.

Our sunshades are down at Treasure Beach in play yards and we need those put back up if anyone has the knowledge and can help.

Someone or a business to sponsor the adoption fees for the lifesaving hero hurricane fosters so that they have the option to keep the animals they stepped forward to save at no cost to them!!!

The SAFE Resale Store at 1250 CR A1A has no power but is open for limited hours (12-5 on 9/14) for CASH sales in hopes of raising some much needed funds.  Donations are gratefully accepted here and very appreciated as well!

If you can help please text 904-325-0196 or 386-983-2337.

Hope was left tied at the Hollister shelter In August . Tied and left alone and afraid. Left to wonder what her fate would be. Thankfully, staff found her in the morning.
They gave her the time to heal and time to see that life would be good now -maybe even wonderful !!!
Yesterday her life became wonderful as Hope was adopted and has a family to always love and cherish her and to keep her in good health .
William, Kringle, Ranger, Cindy, Maxwell
PAST SAFE PETS CHECK IN – SAFE loves to hear from former SAFE dogs, cats, and their people!! Thanks to all for checkin’ in!!
Jordan checkin’ in – This little guy was super frightened at the shelter. He now has a canine buddy and a home of his own! Very cool to see him confident!!!
Zeus checkin’ in. Rescued from Clay many months ago, his dad fell in love with him instantly….and he has been his baby since then!
Missy checkin’ in! “My blessing. She has adapted very well! She is so lovable she just follows me everywhere and sits where I’m sitting”
Bronson checkin’ in. Adopted 2015. Heartworm negative now and mom came and adopted Pip today (bottom picture below)!
Rusty checkin’ in!  “Rusty, now Bear, adopted from y’all on Tuesday. He’s doing great. An awesome dog. Very smart and very loving! Such a joy to have in my life! Only 2 indoor accidents the first day home and none since. Already learned sit and stay. Working on lay down and paw. Great dog! Thank you for the opportunity to add this wonderful guy to my life!!
CURRENT ADOPTABLE ANIMALS – SAFE locations (ALL THREE!!) are very full of happy and healthy dogs and cats looking for homes. There truly is an animal for everyone!  Please drop by and fall in love. Please peruse the attached pictures of some of “babies” ready to go home! Dave, Nine months, Courage and Alabama, Georgia, Mr. Noodle,  AND Zoey!!!!

Cerebello-Vestibular Syndrome? No problem for Hugo! Hugo’s exam by a veterinary neurologist revealed good news!
– His problem is from damage to the part of his brain that controls balance.
– It appears to be long standing, maybe even from birth.
– It is not contagious and is not likely to get worse.
– The condition doesn’t cause Hugo distress.
– His “prancing and head bobbing” are expressions of excitement not unlike other dogs jumping up on the kennel gate.
In the words of the vet: “He is adorable and adoptable.” SAFE staff and volunteers agree!
He is medium sized , very good natured and happy to be alive !!!

FAR REACHING SAFE EFFORTS – SAFE often goes above and beyond in meeting its mission to Save Animals From Euthanasia.
Safe SuperHero Zetti drove through the night to meet Sparky’s new mom in North Carolina! Sparky will now go on to live a wonderful life in Maryland! Thank You Zetti and thank you to Sparky’s new mom who could not stop thinking about him after meeting him while here on vacation!

The SAFE Neuter Commuter Rides Again!

Saving Animals From Euthanasia (SAFE) has teamed up with First Coast No More  Homeless Pets (FCNMHP) to begin the SAFE Neuter commuter once again!

It is the hope of both organizations that one day there will be no need for the euthanasia of healthy animals. To achieve this goal, all animals in our communities must be spayed/neutered.

To celebrate this effort, both organizations have generously donated $2,000 each for the Putnam community to have 50 feline spays/neuters and 40 canine spays/neuters at no charge to their owners.  That’s right – the surgeries will be FREE!

50 Free Feline Spay /neuter surgeries will be offered on January 22.
15 Free canine spays/neuters will be offered on each of the following days: January 29, February 5, and February 12, 2016.

After that, FCNMHP will keep the prices low for the Putnam SAFE neuter commuter transports. The cost will be only $40 for cats and $50 for dogs. SAFE will provide transportation to/from FCNMHP in Jacksonville.

Rabies vaccines must be paid by owner and cost $15.

Information and sign-up for surgeries will begin Monday , January 18, at the SAFE Putnam Resale Store; the $15 payment for rabies vaccine must be made at that time unless proof of rabies vaccinations are provided. The Resale Store is located at 819 S Moody Rd. in Palatka.

For the January 22 cat spay/neuter day, all cats must be in separate carrier with owner’s name on the outside. Cats must arrive at the SAFE Resale store between 7:00-7:45am on surgery day. Feral cats must be in trap; one cat per trap.  No food after midnight the night before.

Questions can be submitted by email to OR TEXT TO 904-325-0196 .

SAFE is a 501c3 non-profit run on donations and is accepting donations to keep this program running at  Click on the “Donate” tab. Donations can also be mailed to SAFE  at P.O. Box 840215, St Augustine, FL 32080,  or they may be dropped at any SAFE location.

FCNMHP is also a non profit organization. Last fiscal year FCNMHP completed 26,250 spay/neuter surgeries, and with new programs, such as partnering with SAFE to help Putnam county residents with free or low cost spay/neuter, we hope to see that number increase. FCNMHP is one of the largest spay/neuter clinics in the country, with over 200,000 surgeries to date.  Go to to find out more about FCNMHP and the wonderful work they do.
